ARTBOOKS FOR ARTTEACHERS
Just My Type is a book of stories about fonts. It examines how Helvetica and Comic Sans took over the world. It explains why we are still influenced by type choices made more than 500 years ago, and why the T in the Beatles logo is longer than the other letters. It profiles the great originators of type, from Baskerville to Zapf, as well as people like Neville Brody who threw out the rulebook. The book is about that pivotal moment when fonts left the world of Letraset and were loaded onto computers, and typefaces became something we realized we all have an opinion about. And beyond all this, the book reveals what may be the very best and worst fonts in the world – and what your choice of font says about you.
Today we can imagine no simpler everyday artistic freedom than the pull-down font menu. Here is the spill of history, the echo of Johann Gutenberg with every key tap. Here are names we recognize: Helvetica, Times New Roman, Palatino and Gill Sans. Here are the names from folios and flaking manuscripts: Bembo, Baskerville and Caslon. Here are possibilities for flair: Bodoni, Didot and Book Antiqua. And here are the risks of ridicule: Brush Script, Herculanum, Braggadocio and Comic Sans.

Body of Art is the first book to explore the various ways the human body has been both an inspiration and a medium for artists over hundreds of thousands of years. Unprecedented in its scope, it examines the many different manifestations of the body in art, from Anthony Gormley and Maya Lin sculptures to eight-armed Hindu gods and ancient Greek reliefs, from feminist graphics and Warhol's empty electric chair to the blue-tinted complexion of Singer Sargent's Madame X.

Celebrated photographer Robert Mapplethorpe challenged the limits of censorship and conformity, combining technical and formal mastery with unexpected, often provocative content that secured his place in history. Mapplethorpe’s artistic vision helped shape the social and cultural fabric of the 1970s and ’80s and, following his death in 1989 from AIDS, informed the political landscape of the 1990s. His photographic works continue to resonate with audiences all over the world.

The most comprehensive exploration of the art of the Japanese garden published to date, this book covers more than eight centuries of the history of this important genre. Author and garden designer Sophie Walker brings fresh insight to this subject, exploring the Japanese garden in detail through a series of essays and with 100 featured gardens, ranging from ancient Shinto shrines to imperial gardens and contemporary Zen designs. Leading artists, architects, and other cultural practitioners offer personal perspectives in newly commissioned essays.
Grid Index, Carsten Nicolai’s exhaustive compendium of grids and tilings, is no exception. Progressing along its lone axis, the book is a sequence of 294 different dissections of the Cartesian plane. It’s a difficult kind of dimensional collapse, arranging the planar into the linear, though imperfect at moments, Nicolai is at home working within self-imposed constraints. The artist’s affinity for grids, the Wim Crouwel–esque typography on the book’s cover, and much of his previous work, including his spare musical releases as Alva Noto, suggest as much. Now Nicolai offers us a generative codex, a source manual for some of the geometric structures underlying the visual world.
Over the past three decades, Christian Marclay has established himself as a formidable contemporary artist, exploring the rich juncture-points between the visual arts, film and mass-market musical culture. The photograms in this exhibition are made with music cassette tapes he physically disassembled. In some, the plastic cases form austere grids; in others, spools of unwound tapes have been strewn over the surface of the paper in loops and twists, recalling canvases by Twombly or Pollock. The titles of these works, including Allover (Dixie Chicks, Nat King Cole and Others) and Allover (LeVert, Barbara Streisand and Others), derive from the specific tapes used in making each image.
